Glossary

A

AB
Means Label Agriculture Biologique that is to say Organic Agriculture Label. It is a French quality label created in 1985 and defined by the French Ministry of Agriculture who is also the owner of the Label.
Organic acid
Organic compound with acidic properties. The most common organic acids are the carboxylic acids whose acidity is associated with their carboxyl group –COOH. A few common examples include the Acetic acid, the Formic acid and the Oxalic acid. In the Propolis, we find the Benzoic acid and the Gallic acid.
Phenol acid
Organic compound made of a carboxylic function bonded directly to a hydroxyl group (-OH).
Abeille Sentinelle de l'Environnement

AFSSAPS
Means literally Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits de Santé. It is the French Health Products Safety Agency. It was created in 1998 and it ensures health security for every health and cosmetic product.
Antifungal
Destroying or inhibiting the growth of fungi.
Antiprotozoal
A substance that kills or inhibits the growth of single-celled microorganisms called protozoa.
Apitherapy
It is the use of products collected, transformed or secreted by the bee (pollen, propolis, royal jelly, honey and venom) for medicinal purposes.

B

Beeswax
Yellow substance secreted by the bees, which is used to build the cells in the hive.
BBD
Best Before Date : These dates are only advisory and refer to the quality of the product, in contrast with use by dates, which indicates that the product is no longer safe to consume after the specified date. In fact, food kept past the best before date will not necessarily be harmful, but may begin to lose its optimum flavour and texture.

Cosmébio
Professional association for organic and ecological cosmetics created in 2002. It ensures the consumers that the cosmetic products contain natural and organic ingredients and it is certified by an independent certification board.

DGCCRF
Means literally Direction Générale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes, that is to say General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer affairs and Fraud control. It is dedicated to the market competition regulation and the consumer economic protection and safety.
Dynamogenic
Stimulates the body, provides energy.

ECOCERT
ECOCERT is a control and certification organisation, whose activities are governed accordingly by the public authorities and legislation. ECOCERT SAS is accredited for the certification of organic and ecological products from the food and farming industries.
Ecological
A product will be considered as Ecological if it possesses less than 95% of organic vegetable ingredients and at least 5% of ingredients certified organic on the total product.
EGP
Glycolic Extract of Propolis.
Essential Oil
Volatile, fragrant substance obtained from plants in a liquid form. The oils are isolated by steam distillation, extraction, or mechanical expression of the plant material; often only certain parts are used to extract the aromatic essence.

Organic Dry Extract of Propolis.

Flavonoids
They are the most common group of polyphenolic compounds. They are widely distributed in plants. Flavonoids are the most important plant pigments. For several years, medical researches have highlighted their pharmacological properties, such as antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor and anti-allergy properties.

Gas chromatography
Analytic method for separating and analyzing molecules from a complex combination that can be vaporized without decomposition.
GMO
Genetically Modified Organism.

Good Manufacturing Practice.
Glycolic
It is the name given to an acid resulting from the oxidation of glycol.

HACCP
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point. System that identifies, evaluates and controls the significant dangers regarding food safety.
Honey
Sweet substance, from blonde to brown colour, produced by the honey bees, which form nectar into honey by a process of regurgitation and store it as a food source in wax honeycombs inside the beehive.

Analytical technique for the determination of the elemental composition and chemical structures of molecules.

O

Organic
A product will be considered as Organic if it possesses more than 95% of organic vegetable ingredients and at least 10% of ingredients certified organic on the total product.

It is coming from the Greek etymology and means that can be perceived by sensory organs. Those tests are performed, especially on food, using the sensory organs, to evaluate taste, color, odor and feel

Paraben
Esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and alcohol. Parabens are found naturally in plant sources. They are widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries as they present bactericidal and fungicidal properties. Biologically, parabens have shown on mammals an activity close to the estrogenic activity (female sex hormone) and an issue concerning their potential toxicity has been raised.
Phenol acid
Organic compound made of a carboxylic function bonded directly to a hydroxyl group (-OH).
Phenoxyethanol
Glycol ether often used in dermatological products such as skin creams and sunscreen. It usually used as a preservative and a solvent.
Pollen
Breeding element produced by the flowers stamens (male reproductive organ of a flower). It can be carried by insects, animals or wind to the female organs.

Propolis
Resinous substance collected by the bees on the buds on different trees (poplars, willows, birches, conifers...).

R

Royal Jelly
Honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of larvae, as well as adult queens. It is secreted from the hypopharyngeal glands in the heads of worker bees, and fed to all larvae in the colony. Thus, royal jelly can only be found in the queen cell (honeycomb) to be collected in satisfying quantity.

Terpene derivatives
Class of hydrocarbons with numerous derivatives (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids) with similar structure which are considered as terpene compounds. They are produced primarily by a wide variety of plants from which they often are the “scented constituent” (turpentine, camphor, menthol, lemongrass). Terpenes are the constituents of the essential oils of plants and flowers, used widely as fragrances in perfumery. Some of them have an important biological role (hormones, vitamins.)
